Premio de Arquitectura Contemporánea de la Unión Europea - Premio Mies van der Rohe 2003

La segona edició del Premi d’Arquitectura Contemporània de la Unió Europea, convocat per la Unió Europea i la Fundació Mies van der Rohe de Barcelona, s’ha concedit al projecte “Aparcament i Terminal Hoeinheim Nord” realitzat per l’arquitecta Zaha Hadid a la ciutat francesa d’Estrasburg. La Menció Especial Arquitecte Emergent ha estat per l’edifici de l’ajuntament de Scharnhauser Park, realitzat per l’arquitecte Jürgen Mayer H. a Ostfildern, Alemanya. El veredicte del jurat internacional s’ha anunciat aquest matí a Brussel·les per la Comissària Europea d’Educació i Cultura, Viviane Reding, en presència dels guardonats i dels membres de la Fundació Mies van der Rohe. La cerimònia de lliurament tindrà lloc el 28 de maig al Pavelló Mies van der Rohe a Barcelona, en el marc del Saló Construmat.
El projecte guanyador, realitzat per l’arquitecta Zaha Hadid, amb estudi professional a Londres, és una estació de tramvia i un aparcament amb capacitat per a 700 cotxes a la ciutat d’Estrasburg. El jurat ha valorat “les convencionals qualitats arquitectòniques del projecte, reconeixent l’economia, amb mínimes interpretacions, no només per l’edifici de l’estació del tramvia, sinó també per tot el seu entorn de la zona d’aparcament que ha estat acuradament enriquida creant així, un espai de gran intensitat a partir d’una aparent innocent oportunitat”.
El projecte guanyador de la Menció Especial Arquitecte Emergent ha estat pel nou edifici de l’ajuntament de la ciutat alemanya d’Ostfildern, situat a Scharnhauser Park, una antiga base militar nord-americana propera a la ciutat d’Stuttgart, obra de Jürgen Mayer H. El projecte ha estat concebut com un edifici públic multifuncional que integra dependències administratives, serveis socials, biblioteca, sala d’exposicions, aules, sala d’actes i altres dependències plurifuncionals. En aquesta ocasió, el jurat ha valorat l’obra “per la seva qualitat i sofisticació, destacant-ne l’intel·ligent disseny i execució del projecte, especialment remarcable per tractar-se d’una primera obra”.
Els dos arquitectes guanyadors assistiran a Barcelona el pròxim 28 de maig a l’acte de lliurament del guardó. Prèviament, el 27 de maig, ambdós arquitectes pronunciaran una conferència sobre la seva obra al Palau de Congressos de la Fira de Barcelona, en el marc del Saló Construmat. Així mateix, el 29 de maig, dins del marc del Premi, tindrà lloc un debat sobre arquitectura europea contemporània que es desenvoluparà al Col·legi d’Arquitectes de Catalunya, acompanyat d’una presentació audiovisual de les obres premiades i dels altres treballs seleccionats pel jurat del conjunt d’obres presentades a la convocatòria d’enguany.
El jurat del premi ha estat integrat per nou membres: Aaron Betsky, Eduard Bru, Ingeborg Flagge, Shane O’Toole, Matthias Sauerbruch, Kazuyo Sejima, Deyan Sudjic, Alejandro Zaera-Polo i David Chipperfield, com a president. De les 269 obres presentades, procedents de tot Europa, el jurat en seleccionà 41 de nivell excepcional, cinc de les quals van rebre la visita del jurat entre l’1 i el 4 de maig.

Jury approaches final stages in selection process for biennial European Architecture Prize.

The selection process for the second European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award is well underway with the whittling down process nearing an end. Commissioner Viviane Reding will publicly announce the prize winner and special mention on 22nd May in Brussels, in their presence. A total of 269 works were proposed from all over Europe and from these the jury has made a selection of 41 works of exceptional standard.
In 2001, the European Commission joined forces with the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, creating the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award. The prize significantly contributes at European level to raising awareness about the cultural significance of contemporary architecture and its impact on the present and future development of European cities and communities. Throughout its existence, it has succeeded in focusing attention on the important contribution of European professionals to the development of new architectural concepts and technologies and rewarding their talent. The European Commission’s involvement in this prestigious prize has added weight to the original objectives of the prize and has succeeded in broadening the scope and scale of the award, acknowledging excellence and conceptual, technical and constructional innovation.
The prize is awarded to recent works, less than two years old, produced in countries covered by the Culture 2000 Programme. There are two awards for each edition: the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award and the Emerging Architect Special Mention for up and coming architects under the age of 40. The 2001 Awards were presented to Rafael Moneo for Kursaal Centre in San Sebastián, Spain and Florian Nagler for the Kaufmann Holz Distribution Centre in Bobingen, Germany respectively.
An international jury of nine members1, made up of architects, critics and theorists in contemporary architecture chaired by renowned British architect David Chipperfield, has been responsible for going through this year’s numerous entries. The selection procedure has been in full swing since a first meeting in January. From an initial selection of 41 nominees, five selected buildings will be visited by the jury between the 1st and 4th of May. A meeting soon after will determine the identities of the prize winner and special mention.
The European Commissioner responsible for Education and Culture, Viviane Reding will announce the winners during a press conference in Brussels on 22nd May 2003, in presence of the winners as well as members of the Fundació Mies van der Rohe. The granting ceremony of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award and the Emerging Architect Special Mention will take place on 28th May 2003 in the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona, Spain.
The award ceremony will be followed by a symposium on Contemporary European Architecture on 29th May 2003 in the Col·legi d’Arquitectes de Catalunya. An audio-visual presentation featuring the works awarded the prize and special mention along with all the other works selected by the jury for their outstanding qualities will also be shown. This presentation will form part of the exhibition, which includes panels with photographs and drawings of the 41 works along with models and descriptive texts, which will then travel to a number of European cities.The truly positive objective of the travelling exhibition will be the sharing of this heritage with enthusiasts throughout Europe.
