COUP DE DÉS
DEBATES ON ARCHITECTURE: HOUSING AND PUBLIC SPACE
BARCELONA PAVILION
October 22 – 23, 2004
Coup de Dés is intended to be the first
of a series of regular events to present and discuss some of the
most significant propositions that inform the architecture being
built today, as an extension of the research and documentation developed
in the framework of the Mies van der Rohe Award. The reference to
the text by Stéphane Mallarmé serves as a point of
departure. Nothing is pre-established, not even plurality, hybridisation
or multiplicity. Today's architectural project is a risk, calculated
or not, faced with an unlimited number of possibilities. Acuteness,
ingenuity, astuteness or chance are the reference points of a reality
that appears as un-disciplined, dis-ordered, un-leashed. Presented
by their authors, discussed by other architects and critics, and
evaluated by experts from other disciplines, each presentation provides
the opportunity to understand a particular work of architecture
by bending it in many different directions. For this edition, the
aim is to focus on housing and its relationship to public space,
a theme that will be developed in parallel within an architectural
workshop with an international body of students. Six works will
be analysed for two days at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona.
